How I Came to This Work
I’ve spent most of my career in nonprofits, as a volunteer, board member, grant writer, program director, development director, consultant, and now, as a development director again.
I have always been a writer, and I care deeply about good writing.
In March 2023, I started (reluctantly) using AI for fundraising communications.
Today, I use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other tools every day to run a development department of one person.
I love helping others engage with this technology, and I hold trainings and workshops in my free time.
AI is here. And the world needs nonprofit voices to be part of the conversation.
My Approach
I’m not a typical AI trainer, because I’m not a lifelong tech enthusiast. This technology came and found me—first in 2012, when I briefly had a part-time job as a “metaphor analyst” explaining figurative language to help train an early AI model, and then when I was pushed into it in early 2023.
I understand the reasons people find this technology objectionable, because I had those objections myself. And I still care deeply about good writing.
But I have also learned that this technology, finally, works really well for someone like me, because I can talk to it in normal language instead of having to learn a lot of rules.
As a trainer, I talk about the concerns and objections. I show the extraordinary creative potential of this new tool not just to work faster, but to go broader and deeper, and explore new things. I shun jargon. I encourage questions and promote experimentation. And I always include a follow-up session to help people commit to their own learning.

Last time I checked, I’ve been to 45 countries and 45 US states. And no, “airport only” or “didn’t get out of the car” doesn’t count.
I also love the outdoors: hiking, swimming, skiing, and climbing mountains—alone, and with my husband and our two kids.
